Abstract

The mangrove planting movement carried out on the coast of Mon Singet, Gampong Kajhu, Aceh Besar, is part of community service in order to commemorate International Biodiversity Day. This activity is not just a symbolic action, but an effort to re-touch the relationship between humans and nature, especially in areas that have witnessed the devastating 2004 tsunami disaster. The damaged and neglected mangrove forests became the starting point for ecological reflection, as well as a collaborative learning space for students, pupils, lecturers, local communities, and academic partners from the Department of Geography, Universiti Malaya. Through a participatory and educational approach, this activity includes socialization, planting mangrove seedlings, and beach clean-up actions. The results of the activity show that direct involvement in environmental actions can foster ecological empathy, collective awareness, and strengthen the values of locality-based geography education. Overall, this international community service activity teaches that environmental conservation is not just a technical responsibility or government policy, but also a social action that requires cross-sector collaboration, and social action that involves the heart, knowledge, and courage to move together for a more sustainable future so as to be able to save future generations from the threat of a tsunami disaster that has the potential to occur anytime and anywhere.
